Joachim was convinced that the reason for their suffering was his sins. That’s why he went to the desert where he fasted and prayed for some time. Anne was also ardently praying. Then Archangel Gavrail met her and told her that she would give birth to a daughter named Maria and the whole world will be blessed because of the girl. The happy parents promised to make their child serve and devote to God. When the little Maria was 3-year old, they took her to Jerusalem where she climbed the temple’s stairs on her own. She entered confidently the temple. Virgin Mary accepted and took responsibly to her mission to help lonely and ill people as well as abandoned and helpless children.According to folk beliefs’, the holiday is also known as Malka Bogoroditsa to be distinguished from another holiday Golyama Bogoroditsa (August 15) when Virgin Mary’s Assumption is honoured. Bread covered with honey is prepared. Women ask Virgin Mary to help them in birth delivery and childcare.
